Abstract The effect of short-term and long-term root treatment with melatonin on growth parameters, photochemical activity PSII, content basic photosynthetic pigments, lipid peroxidation, accumulation inorganic ions in barley plants under the action cadmium chloride was studied. It shown for first time that protective phytomelatonin during is manifested a decrease toxic pigments shoots roots plants. based its ability to reduce intensity oxidative stress by maintaining level carotenoids increasing antioxidant enzymes. effectiveness use number indicators exceeds from exposure. data obtained indicate possibility using as substance induces state plant priming upon subsequent exposure cadmium.
